Welcome to the Safehouse website

The Safehouse project is a Specific Targeted Research Project (STREP) funded by the EU framework programme 6.

The project aims at improving the evaluation of the risk to the consumer of contamination of eggs with Salmonella and other infectious agents, caused by the move to more welfare-friendly egg-production systems for laying hens. It also aims at proposing methods of reducing any potential, additional food safety risks generated by alternative systems for laying hens, taking into account the need to maintain eggs of high quality.

The website has been set up to aid in dissemination of the generated scientific knowledge and practical applications of the project results to the research community, poultry practitioners, poultry related industry and relevant authorities.
